Every year our school gives all high students an opportunity to go to "Bible camp", as they call it. Actually, they are all required to go, but what a cool opportunity! Students get to take a break from every day classes and go to camp. The 9th and 10th graders go to an adventure camp, and the 11th and 12th graders go on a service trip. This year I went with the 11th and 12th graders to a village, where we had the opportunity to serve a community. The village we stayed in was an area that was hit hard by the recent war. It takes a long for a country to rebuild and recover from war.
We worked at school, helping build a foundation for a new building, lay bricks, and put together a temporary classroom with bamboo sticks. It was physical labor in the hot sun. I love this kind of stuff! Even though some of the students don't enjoy physical labor as much as I do, they all did their best.
The school we worked with was full of students. We had the opportunity to play with the students teach them some English. Our high school students, who speak Cambodian, were able to lead the English teaching in the some of the classrooms. Some of them may have even found a gift in teaching. Overall, we had great opportunities to love on these kids. These children don't have much. Their families don't have enough to provide three meals a day for these children. UNICEF has interceded and now provides breakfast for some of the younger students everyday. Please pray that God will stir the hearts of these students and some how reveal himself to them.
We stayed at a camp outside of the village that is set up for groups to come and stay and work at this school. One of our teachers who speaks Cambodian had great conversations with the camp director about Christ. The camp director showed some interest in Jesus. We had devotions every evening and the camp staff would often stay and listen. Please pray that God will draw the camp director and the staff to Himself. The students had a great time hanging out with each other. Please pray that their hearts will be grounded in Christ as they will soon be leaving this "Christian bubble" where following Christ is easy, and entering into the real world where there faith will be put to the test.
